Formation of Kollam Ophthalmic Association
- Kollam Ophthalmic Association was formed on 6/6/1991 after a meeting held at Ashtamudi Boat Club, Kollam by Ophthalmologists of Kollam district.

- In 1987 before the formation of Kollam of Ophthalmic Association, Kollam hosted 14th Annual Conference of KSOS.
- Dr. S. Mohandas was the Chief Organising Chairman and Dr. S. Venugopal was the Organising Secretary.

Dr. S. Mohan Das
Born on 18-6-1939 at Shertallai, graduated from Trivandrum Medical College, in 1964 Served as Captain in Army Medical Corps till, 1969 Served as Ophthalmologist, in District Hospital, Alleppey (’71-’73), G. H. Palluruthy (‘73) and District Hospital Quilon, till ’79. Joined as Dy. D. M. O. Idukki in 1984 and took charge as Asst. Director of Health Services (Ophthalmic cell) in Jan. 1985
Joined Rotary Movement in 1971 and has served in various capacities as Club Secretary, President, Director, Chairman of various avenues and District Chairman of Eye Camps for Club in Kerala & Tamil Nadu (Dist. 321) While President of Rotary Club of Quilon in 1985, the club received 12 District Level awards, which remain, as an all-time record.
Has attended all the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Quilon Consecutively and remains a cent percenter since last 15 yrs. which is a rare achievement. Joined I. M. A. in 1973 and has served as S W. C. member. State Council member, Central Council member, President Quilon Branch, Chairman Organising Committee of 33rd I. M. A. State Annual, Chairman of Joint Action Council, during the Homeo – Ayurveda Myopathy Struggle, remember Editorial Board of K. M. J. Senior Vice President of I M 4. Kerala Chapter etc. Quilon Branch was adjudged as the best Branch for best overall performance.
14th State Annual of K. S. 0. S. in ’87, and State President of K. S. 0. S. in ’88.
Served as Hon: District Secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, Quilon Branch, and now servicing as its Vice Chairman, and State Executive member. During the terms as Secretary, an of fice building for the Red Cross was constructed for the first time in Quilon.

Dr.B.Jayaprasad is a renowned senior specialist in phacoemulsification (Key hole Cataract Surgery), Paediatric cataract surgeries, anterior segment surgeries, lasers ,orbital surgeries, LASIK and ophthalmic plastic surgeries. Dynamic, enthusiastic and energetic personality who uplifted KOA with novel ideas in conducting our annual CME. He was the secretary of KOA in 2012, Organising Secretary of Drishti 2017, Joint Secretary of KSOS in 2018. Very passionate and energetic young man who uplifted KOA to an active association. Served as Treasurer of KOA for around 12 years. Secretary of KOA for 2 years. Now continuing as KOA President from 2022. Secured best non metro club award thrice in 2016,2022 and 2023 which was a great achievement. Held a key post in DRISHTI 2017.Was the cultural activity coordinator of NAYANARAGAM which was a hit program. Madam is very active in KSOS also. Was KSOS scientific committee member and continuing as cultural programme coordinator during DRISHTI. Beyond ophthalmology, madam is a talented singer and known as nightingale of KSOS. Very humble, energetic and helping personality who worked for KOA for its growth.

Dr Kiran Balagopal was a very active member of KOA. He was the executive member of KSOS. Served as treasurer of KOA, Treasurer of DRISHTI 2017. Well known Phaco surgeon and glaucoma specialist. Presented papers in conferences. Worked in Chaithanya Kollam. Presently in Tranvancore medical college and Bishop Benzigar Hospital, Kollam.

Active member of KOA. Working in medical college services. Renowned cataract and retina specialist, with good academic career. Was in the scientific committee of Drishti 2017. Presntly working in Kollam medical college as associate professor in Ophthalmology.

Was a very active member of KOA. Served as KOA secretary from 2019 to 2021.Bagged best non metro club award in 2019.Conducted many camps programmes during her period. Beyond Ophthalmology she started learning dance at a later age and now it has become her passion.

World Diabetic Day
Blood sugar detection and diabetic retinopathy screening camp. World Diabetic Day 18.11.2023. KOA conducted diabetic retinopathy screening Camp at Kundara hospital. Dr Shiney Napolean secretary KOA lead the camp. Around 75 patients attended the camp and screened for diabetic retinopathy. 8 patients were diagnosed to have diabetic retinopathy and was given appropriate guidance and treatment. Dr Arya, physician gave awareness talk on diabetes. Spectacles were given to few patients.

June 2024-On16/5/2024, KOA conducted glaucoma education program in Association with Glaucoma Society of India under the aegis of KSOS at Hotel Sea Palace, Mundakkal, Kollam. CME by Young Ophthalmologist - YOLK
Kollam ophthalmic association got a special privilege in the month of July to begin a new concept of CME duly planned, organised and participated by young ophthalmologists. The concept was given by Dr S J Saikumar, KSOS President and sir mentioned about this presidential program during his visit to Kollam ophthalmic association.
The CME was named as Yolk Insight by Dr Rajiv Sukumaran. He selected the theme colour and designed the logo.Yolk insight was conducted on 30 July 2023 at hotel LEELA ASHTAMUDI Kollam under the aegis of KSOS. The organising chairman was Dr Divya Kishan and organising secretary was Dr Rakhi P D’Cruz. The guest of honour was Dr S J Saikumar KSOS president.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Divya S Iyer IAS district collector Pathanamthitta.
This was the inspiration to lounge YOLK in the state and renamed as YOUNG OPHTHALMOLOGIST OF KERALA

Literary achievements 2022 Published a collection of poems named “പറയാതെ പോയവർ”. It was released by food and civil supplies minister Adv. G.R. Anil by handing it over to Dr. George Onakkoor on 2022 April 9. Received award “Malayalam kavitha 2022 kavya puraskaaram” from Book café publications on 29 July 2022 for the literary contributions. Kollam Ophthalmic Association honored with ponnaada on 24 June 2022 for ഭാഷയെ സ്നേഹിച്ച്, എഴുത്തിനെ പ്രോത്സാപ്പിച്ച്, കവിതയെ അംഗീകരിച്ച് അഭിനന്ദനങ്ങളേകി.

Activities From October 1st to December 31st October
World Sight Day
10/10/24 Bishop Benzigar Hospital conducted blind walk and Oath taking ceremony in relation to World Sight Day. Doctors,staff and nursing students attended the walk and took the oath. Flagged off by hospital director. Around 100 participated.
20/10/24-KOA conducted a camp related to worlds sight day on 20/ 10/ 24 at TD Nagar Kalamandir from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in association with TD Nagar Residence Association .Camp was inaugurated by Dr. K. Balakrishnan our founder member.
TD Nagar Association Secretary Mr Murali V Sharma gave a warm welcome to all. Dr Shiney Nepoleon KOA Secretary gave felicitation. After that Dr P Ramesan took an awareness class related to Word Sight Day. TD Nagar Association treasurer Gopalakrishna Rao delivered vote of thanks. After the meeting camp started. Dr P Ramesan, Dr Maheshwary S, Dr Sridevi P R, Dr S Venugopal, Dr K Balakrishnan lead the camp. Around 150 patients attended the camp. 12 patients were selected for cataract surgery and sent to district hospital. Free medicines were distributed. Spectacles were given at reduced cost.
Ashtamudi Ophthalmica 2024
- 27/10/24- KOA conducted its annual CME ASHTAMUDI OPHTHALMICA 2024 at Quilon Beach Hotel from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, named as TABLE TALKS. Organising Chairman was Dr N Prasanna Kumar and Organising Secretary was Dr Haripriya H. It was a new concept. The name and concept were suggested by Dr Rajiv Sukumaran and Dr Jayasree Rajiv. 5 tables were arranged-Cornea, Cataract, Retina, Glaucoma and Innovations and LB. For each table 1 instructor and 3 co-instructors and 1 coordinator from KOA. Total 3 rounds 1 hour each.
Registration started at 8 30 am. Dr Yasmin Ali, Dr Megha Sugunan, Dr Haleema managed registration.

- CME was followed by tasty dinner. Around 103 delegates and 27 supportive staffs attended the meeting.
Inaugural Function
- Inaugural function started at 11 am. Function started with a prayer song by Dr. Anjana Nair S. Dr. Prasanna Kumar Organising chairman gave a warm welcome to all. After that KOA President Dr. Mini Jayachandran delivered Presidential address. After the Presidential address Dr. Thomas Cherian KSOS President inaugurated the CME by lighting the lamp. This was followed by inaugural address. After the inaugural address Dr. Mini Jayachandran KOA President presented Dr. S. Mohandas Memorial oration award to Dr. Giridhar Anantharaman, Senior Consultant Vitreoretina and Director, Giridhar Eye Institute, Cochin.
- A memento was presented to Dr. Giridhar by Dr. Rajiv Sukumaran.
This was followed by life time achievement award ceremony .Two senior members from KOA received lifetime achievement award, Dr. Sreedevi P R and Dr. S. Maheswary.
They were adorned with Ponnada by KSOS President Dr. Thomas Cherian and plaque were given. After receiving the award Dr. Sreedevi and Dr. Maheshwari expressed their gratitude for honouring them. This was followed by distribution of certificate and cash prize for winners of essay writing competition held in Lions club Kollam related to eye donation fortnight.
- Essay writing was conducted both in English and Malayalam .Winners of English essay writing are – 1st prize 5000 Rs and certificate to Meenakshi K,2nd prize Rs 3000 and certificate to Shreya Vinod ,3rd prize 1000Rs and certificate to Devanandana S. Winners of Malayalam essay are 1ST prize 5000 Rs and certificate to Sridevi S ,2nd prize 3000 Rs and certificate to Aishwarya R B,3rd prize1000 Rs and certificate to Akash P. Award was presented to the winners by KSOS President Dr. Thomas Cherian After that Dr. Shiney Nepolean KOA Secretary gave felicitation which was followed by vote of thanks by Dr. Haripriya H, organising Secretary.

Chairman was Dr. K. Mahadevan and Co-Chairman was Dr. Divya Kishan. Topic was Leadership Lesson from forty-year Odessey with Ophthalmology. Sir beautifully described his journey as an Ophthalmologist as well as a leader which was very new and enlightened us. This was followed by third session.
World Diabetic Day
14/11/24 KOA conducted an awareness talk in Radio Benzigar from 9 30 am to 10 am related to World Diabetic Day. It was a live phone-in program by Dr. Yasmin Ali, Consultant ophthalmologist Bishop Benzigar Hospital Kollam. Around 12 patients called and cleared the doubts.
18/11/24 KOA conducted another awareness talk related to Diabetic retinopathy in Santhwanam radio on 18/11/24 ,5:00 p.m. and 19/ 11/24, 9:00 p.m. Dr. Parvathy R Dev Consultant ophthalmologist and retina specialist, Holy Cross Hospital Kollam gave an awareness about diabetes and diabetic retinopathy.
- 20/11 /24 District Hospital Kollam conducted diabetic retinopathy detection camp and cataract detection camp at family health centre Pozhikara in association with blindness control society, Kollam. Around 80 patients attended the camp. 5 patients were selected for cataract surgery. Patients with Diabetic retinopathy were referred to higher centre.
- 27/11/24 Chaithanya Eye Hospital, Kollam conducted an eye camp at Mayyanad Anganwadi. Dr. Haripriya H lead the camp and gave awareness talk. Around 50 patients attended the camp and 5 were selected for cataract surgery.
KOA in DRISHTI
Kollam Ophthalmic association bagged best nonmetro club award consecutively for the third time. Dr Mini Jayachandran President KOA and Dr Shiney Nepolean, Secretary KOA received the award from KSOS President Dr Thomas Cherian at Hotel Le Meridian during the inaugural function of DRISHTI 2024.
Dr. Rakhi P D’cruz received KJO outstanding reviewer award from KSOS president Dr. Thomas Cherian.
Dr. Rakhi also received best Mentor award for TOT from Padmasree Dr. M. R. Rajagopal
Dr. Rakhi P D’cruz also conducted Mollywood game show first of its kind in Drishti. Dr. Anjana Nair and Dr. Haripriya were a part of it. 3rd position went to team Mamooka lead by Dr. Ajith Varghese. Dr. Safna Hamza got the best artist award Dr. Rajiv Sukumaran and Dr. Mini Jayachandran were the judges.
