Activities of Ophthalmic Society of Kannur
January 2025
The first meeting of the year 2025 was held on January 24th, at Hotel Benale in Kannur The evening began with a New Year cake-cutting ceremony, setting a warm and celebratory tone. Following this, the official proceedings commenced with a heartfelt welcome by the president, Dr. Suchitra Bhat. The secretary then read the minutes of the previous meeting.
Dr. Sreelatha Vinod introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Dr. Indu B. Narayanan, an oculoplastic surgeon from the Comtrust Group of Eye Hospitals. Dr. Indu delivered an engaging and insightful lecture on “Oculoplasty in General Ophthalmology Practice.” Her presentation, enriched with a variety of clinical cases, provided valuable insights into common oculoplastic conditions encountered in daily practice. The session concluded with a lively and productive discussion.
The Audience question of the Session was won by Dr. Jayan Thomas. Dr. Twinkle Ann George presented a memento to the guest speaker, while Dr. Sreeni handed over a gift to the quiz winner.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by the secretary, followed by dinner and an evening of fellowship among the members.
December 2024
The monthly meeting for December was held on 18/12/24 at Hotel Benale International, Kannur. The meeting commenced with a warm welcome by OSK president Dr Suchitra Bhat. It was decided to continue the current office bearers for 2024-25. Among the key discussions was proposal to organize a family tour in February 2025, which received enthusiastic support from the members. Then the Secretary read the minutes. Dr Veena Raghuraj introduced the guest speaker Dr Maya Natarajan,a renowned refractive and cornea surgeon from Mangalore. Madam delivered an insightful and engaging talk on dry eye diseases a very common but challenging situation affecting the quality of life of many. The audience question by the speaker was won by Dr Athira. Meeting concluded with vote of thanks by the secretary.
Dr. Seema, Dr. Sri Shankar, and Dr. Aswathy Vijayan participated in Keracon ( 6th-8th December 2024).
Dr. Aswathy Vijayan delivered a talk on Complication Management in PKP during the Keracon. PG teaching Programme was conducted by Nethrajyothi Eye Hospital, Kannur on 16/12/24 on retinal laser photocoagulation. Five PG students from Government Medical College, Kannur attended the programme. Hands on laser training was conducted on a dummy from Arvaind Eye Hopsital, Coimbathore
Dr. Remya secured First Prize in the YOSI Reel Competition, held as a part of Christmas celebration by the young ophthalmological society of India.
November 2024
Eye Trust Eye Hospital, under the aegis of OSK, organized a community eye camp at Cheruvanchery, Koothuparamba, on 10th November 2024, with 134 patients attended the camp.
In observance of World Myopia Week, Payyanur Cooperative Hospital conducted vision screening for children at Annur UP School on 19th November 2024, screening 228 students. Dr. Remya, Pediatric Ophthalmologist, conducted an educational session on refractive errors stressing on myopia, prevention and management.
On World Diabetes Day (14/11/2024), Nethrajyothi Eye Hospital, Taliparamba conducted diabetic retinopathy screening. 50 patients were screened.
Drishti 2024 at Le Meridien, Kochi
OSK was well-represented at Drishti 2024, showcasing professional excellence and talent.
Remya served as the Chief Instructor for an instruction course.
Dr. Sreeni, Dr. Swetha, Dr Remya, Dr. Akshaya, Dr. Suchitra, and Dr. Aswathy as co instructors for various ICs .
Dr. Nikhil won the Posterior Segment Image and Dr. Aswathy secured the Runner-up position in the Image Session (People category)
Dr. Amjith reached the final Session of the General Quiz,”Eye Spy” as well as he won many audience prizes in the YOLK Mollywood game show.
Dr. Sreeni, as the Captain of the Kozhikode Chunks in the OPL, partnered with Dr. Jaison, leading the team with distinction. The team won the award for best costume.
Team Jayan won the first prize in the Yolk Mollywood game show with Dr Remya was a team member.
Dr. Aravind Bhat served as a Judge for the prestigious Teachers of Tomorrow programme, contributing his expertise to mentor the next generation.

October 2024
Ophthalmic Society of Kannur conducted drawing competition on the occasion of world day at IMA hall Kannur on 6th October with the theme “See the World, Draw the Difference,”. Seventeen young participants showcased their creativity, and awards were presented by Dr. Harindran Chalad, a distinguished artist from Kannur.
Payyanur Co operative Hospital under the aegis of OSK conducted a free eye camp at Peringome on October 13th. About 75 patients attended the camp. On the same day, Dr. Remya delivered a talk on child eye health, aligning with this year’s World Sight Day theme, “Children, Love Your Eyes.”
Comtrust Eye Hospital: Thalassery held its annual CME, “What Next in Ophthalmology?” on October 20th at Hotel Benale, Kannur. The event was inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of Registration, Museum, Archaeology and Archives, Kerala Sri Ramachandran Kadannapally. Esteemed speakers and panelists, including national figures such as Dr. Lahane, Dr. J K Reddy, Dr. Sandeep Vijayan, Dr. Anand, Dr. M S Ravindra, Dr Raman Mittal and Dr. Sasi Kumar engaged in insightful discussions through a case-based approach.
Dr Remya Edachery participated in the LDP session at the AIOC midterm in Dehradun. She also delivered a faculty talk, presented free paper and e poster.
Dr Swetha. K was a speaker at the CME on glaucoma I-conic conducted by Calicut medical college.
September 2024
The monthly meeting for September was held on September 25th 2024 wednesday, at Hotel Benale in Kannur. It was well-attended and began with a warm welcome from the president, Dr. Suchitra Bhat. The secretary then read the minutes of the previous meeting.
The scientific meeting began with an introduction of the speaker, Dr Nirmal Jayadevan by Dr. Lekha P K. The session was very interactive and engaging. He made the topic very simple by a case based approach. The audience quiz was won by Dr Manjima. Dr Vasantha Damodar presented a memento to Dr Nirmal and Dr Nirmal handed over the prize to the quiz winner. The session concluded with vote of thanks by the secretary followed by dinner and fellowship.
Activities and Achievements
As a part of eye donation fortnight, the club secretary Dr Remya gave an awareness talk in the local network channel.
Dr Athira and Dr Remya attended the national Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Neuro ophthalmology conference POSN held at Banglore on 21st and 22nd September. Both of them presented cases in the session.
Dr Swetha K presented paper at the Glaucocherry the annual Glaucoma Society of India held at Pondicherry on 27-29th September.
Dr Nikhil. K won second prize for the image and video competition conducted by the vitreo retinal society of India for the month of September.

Scientific Meeting
- The scientific portion of the meeting began with an introduction of the speaker, Dr. Nishanth M, by Dr. Aswathy Vijayan.
- Dr. Nishanth delivered a concise and informative presentation on Secondary intraocular lenses, highlighting recent advancements and illustrating his points with videos.
- The session concluded with a productive discussion, and Dr. Aswathy won the audience question.
- The meeting concluded with fellowship and dinner.

Pan-Myo-Kan 2024 (June 23)
The annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) program organized by the Ophthalmic Society of Kannur (OSK), titled Pan-Myo-Kan, was held at Hotel Benale, Kannur on 23/6/24. The event focused on the escalating prevalence of myopia and its associated complications, encompassing fundamental aspects of refraction, advanced refractive procedures, retinal issues, innovative treatments to slow myopia progression, and the strabismus often linked with myopia.
Inaugural function
Dr. Suchitra Bhat formally welcomed the attendees during the inaugural session. Dr. Bastin V A, Scientific Committee Chairman KSOS, officially inaugurated the CME. Dr. Vanaja introduced Dr. Babu KV, who was honored for his contributions towards medical ethics, by Dr. Bastin. The ceremony was further graced by a felicitation speech from Dr. Twinkle Ann George, OSK scientific Committee chairperson and Dr. Remya, the organizing secretary, delivered the vote of thanks.
The scientific discussions covered various critical aspects of myopia:
Refraction and spectacle prescription: Dr Latha Mohan
- Cornea Session: Presentations were delivered by Dr. Maya Natarajan, Dr. Aparna Nayak, and Dr. Sanjana, focusing on refractive surgeries to correct myopia.
- Retina Session: Expertise was shared by Dr. Prakash V S, Dr. Natasha Radhakrishnan, and Dr. Divya Alex, covering retinal complications in myopic patients.
- Cataract Management: Dr. Vijayalakshmi provided a comprehensive overview of managing cataracts in myopic eyes.
- Glaucoma and Myopia: Dr. Kiran Gopalakrishnan discussed the challenges in diagnosing glaucoma in myopic eyes.
- Myopia Progression and Strabismus: Dr. Nirmal A J and Dr. Soumya Nambiar addressed strategies to manage myopia progression and the interplay between strabismus and myopia.

OSK monthly meeting (24/5/24)
- Dr. Simi introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Dr: Fairooz P M, a world-renowned oculoplastic surgeon hailing from Kannur.
- Dr. Fairooz delivered an engaging and informative talk titled “Lumpy and Bumpy Eyelids: What Next?”.
- Her detailed presentation, which included a variety of cases, provided significant insights and raised awareness about eyelid cancers.
- The session was highly interactive, with the audience actively participating and engaging with the material.
Mid term SPOSICON
- OSK membersDr Remya Edachery and Dr Athira participated in the midterm SPOSICON held in Kozhikode on 26/5/24.
- Dr. Remya participated in a debate on the topic patching Vs dichoptics.
- Dr. Remya Edachery won first prize for interesting case and free paper session in the national mid term SPOSIcon held in Kozhikode on 26/5/24.

OculusKan 2024
The annual CME of Government Medical college Kannur Oculus Kan on ocular trauma was held on 7/4/24 at Hotel Benale under the aegis of OSK and KSOS. The CME was well attended. Dr Sreeni Edaklon inaugurated the CME. The sessions featured esteemed speakers including Dr Vinay S Pillai, Dr Meena Chakrabarthy, Dr Gopala Krishna Pillai who delivered insightful presentations on various aspects of ocular trauma and management. Dr Mahesh P, Professor Radiodiagnosis Department , Government medical college Kannur and Dr Sony Jacob , Maxillofacial surgeon, Government dental college were also participated as speakers. The CME provided a platform for the attendees to enhance their understanding of ocular trauma.
OSK Monthly meeting (29/4/24)
Dr. Aravind Bhat introduced the distinguished speaker of the evening, Dr Joseph Benaven, President of the Indian Medical Association Kerala State. The focal point of his talk centered on the contemporary challenges confronting the medical profession, a topic of paramount importance in the present situation. He explained the various schemes and initiatives instituted by the Indian medical association elucidating their relevance.

Beach walk at Payyambalam (10/3/24):
A press meet was held on 7/3/24. The OSK members and their family, IMA members and Cannanore round table members (About 100 people) were participated in the event. Dr Suchitra Bhat welcomed the gathering. Glaucoma theme song flash mob captivated everyone’s attention. Dr Sreeni Edakhlon spoke about the importance of early detection and treatment of glaucoma to the public. Dr Nirmal Raj, President IMA Kannur flagged off the beach walk and pamphlets were distributed to the public. The secretary proposed the vote of thanks. The initiative by OSK has been very effective in making people aware of this blinding disease.
Glaucoma screening for doctors and their family
(10/3/24-16/3/24): In association with IMA and KSOS glaucoma screening were conducted for IMA members and their family. Dr Swetha of Jyothis eye care, Dr Suchitra Bhat of Asoka eye Hospital and Dr Dhanya C of Ahalia Eye Hospital conducted screening in Kannur while Payyanur Eye Foundation conducted screening for IMA members of Payyanur branch.
Participation of OSK members in AIOC 2024:
Six members of ophthalmic society of Kannur attended the All-India Ophthalmology Conference 2024 in Kolkata.
Dr. Sreeni Edakhlon was a chief instructor for an Instruction course in cataract named What next situations in cataract surgery?
Dr. Aswathy Vijayan was co instructor for an IC and her topic was “ bad ocular surface to great visual comfort”. Additionally, she presented a video on tackling the true posterior polar cataracts and an e poster titled” Better safe than sorry -IOL scaffolding a novel technique in hypermature cataract surgery.

OSK monthly meeting (25/2/24)
The monthly meeting of Ophthalmic society of Kannur (OSK) was held on 25/2/2024 at Hotel Benale International. The meeting was well attended. OSK president Dr Suchitra Bhat called the meeting to order and extended a warm welcome to all the attendees. The secretary, Dr Remya presented the minutes with a video presentation compiling the photos from the January event which received high praise from the attendees.
Condolence meeting of Dr. B. V. Bhat
Dr. Vanaja, Dr. Vasantha, Dr. Asha Chandrasekharan, Dr. Sreeni and Dr Jayanth shared heartfelt recollections of Dr Bhat, evoking deep emotions from both junior and senior members alike.
Scientific Session
A comprehensive and enlightening talk on advancements in diabetic retinopathy treatment titled “What is new in diabetic retinopathy?”,was given by Dr. Gopal S Pillai stimulating an engaging discussion among participants. To ensure attentive engagement an audience question segment was included at the end of the session. Dr Manjima won the audience question.
